Utah Latino activist Tony Yapias was officially charged with rape last Monday for allegedly assaulting an unnamed woman who tried to end their long-term relationship.

Yapias made a name for himself by protesting a rally for Republican nominee Donald Trump in March. Yapias criticized Trump for saying that a lot of illegal immigrants were rapists.

The 3rd District Court in Utah charged Yapias with one count of rape — a first degree felony — and one count of evidence tampering. Yapias is a well-known Peruvian activist, and the director of Proyecto Latino de Utah. Yapias was also the director of Utah’s Hispanic affairs office, and has several radio shows.

“For now, I can’t say much about the case,” Yapias wrote on Facebook. ” … I have faith in the judicial system.”

Yapias allegedly forced himself into the woman’s home after she repeatedly told him to go away, first over text, and then through the door. Yapias defended himself by acknowledging the two had sex, but argued that it was consensual, because she removed her clothes.

“The defendant forced the issue and had sexual intercourse with the victim without her consent,” investigators say.
