In a Friday morning interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts, President Barack Obama criticized Donald Trump for recent comments the Republican nominee made about the current state of the black community.

“This was in response to an assertion that he then repeated after my remarks that this is the worst time ever to be black,” Obama explained.

Trump has repeated the line that “African-American communities are absolutely in the worst shape that they’ve ever been,” at recent campaign stops.

“I think that even most eight-year-olds will tell you that whole slavery thing wasn’t very good for black people,” Obama fired back at the Republican nominee. “Jim Crow thing wasn’t very good for black people.”

“What we have to do is use our history to propel us to make even more progress in the future.”
