Various Charlotte activists called for the resignation of Charlotte’s mayor and police chief Monday.

Activists, during a news conference hosted by the group Charlotte Uprising, argued that Mayor Jennifer Roberts and Police Chief Kerr Putney have not protected black or working class people, reports the Charlotte Observer.

They also argued that the two city officials had kept information from the public about two fatal shootings that occurred last week.

A black officer shot Keith Lamont Scott, a black man. During the Charlotte riots, Justin Carr, a protester, was fatally shot. Police arrested and charged Rayquan Borum in Carr’s murder Friday.

Jose Mujica, an organizer, claimed that police shot Carr and then framed a black man. Mujica claims that he did not see the actual shooting, but said other protesters blamed the police for it.

Some local ministers said it was hard to see who fired the shot, with one witness saying that it was another black man who fired the shot.

Bree Newsome, another Charlotte organizer, alleged that the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott was part of “an established pattern of cover-up and misconduct on the part of CMPD.”

“We feel the situation in Charlotte and in North Carolina represents a crisis of injustice and we urge the Department of Justice to intervene immediately,” Newsome said. “The governor has called in the National Guard to protect the windows at Bank of America, but we ask who is being called in to protect the people of Charlotte and North Carolina?”

Charlotte Uprising, which started during the Charlotte riots, consists of community members, local and state organizers dedicated to “police accountability.”

“There is an uprising in Charlotte because our bodies are used as daily target practice by police, our rage is mischaracterized, and our city officials and policymakers fail to act with integrity,” their website reads.
