FBI Director James Comey used “kid gloves” in the Hillary Clinton email investigation, The Wall Street Journal editorial board wrote Wednesday.

“His probe of the former Secretary of State’s private email server is looking more like a kid-glove exercise with each new revelation,” the board wrote, accusing Comey of using a “double standard” on Clinton in part because he granted immunity to her top staffers.

“Why the courtesy?” the editorial board wrote, citing this quote from Republican Rep. Jim Jordan regarding the immunity deals: “If the FBI wanted any other Americans’ laptops, they would just go get them—they wouldn’t get an immunity deal.”

“He’s right,” the board continues. “The FBI merely had to seek a subpoena or search warrant. By offering immunity, the FBI exempted the laptops and their emails as potential evidence in a criminal case.”

The House Judiciary Committee called Comey to testify Wednesday regarding his findings in the investigation of the Democratic presidential nominee’s use of a private email server while secretary of state. Comey did not recommend charges against Clinton, although he judged her handling of classified material “extremely careless” and said she clearly should have known better than to use a private server.

“Mr. Comey’s handling of the Clinton case understandably makes Americans wonder if their government can be trusted to perform this duty,” the editorial board concluded. “On the evidence of the FBI’s special treat for Mrs. Clinton and her aides, they are right to wonder.”
