According to MSNBC anchor Brian Williams, MSNBC anchor Brian Williams came up with the phrase “runaway train.”

During the network’s Thursday coverage of the train crash in Hoboken, New Jersey, Williams filled time by describing the horrific tragedy that left three dead and more than 100 injured.

“This comes after a period of fear about terrorism, and not one but two devices having gone off within that 100 mile radius of New York City,” Williams waxed. “So you can’t blame a lot of folks for thinking that someone did something wrong.”

Williams argued it was natural for people to think “that a criminal act had caused this, but it appears to use the phrase of one of our witnesses from an earlier interview, it appears right now that this was — to coin a phrase — a runaway train.”

“As for this terminal, there is a lot of structural work to do as the investigation gets under way.”
