According to Van Jones, Donald Trump and his “army of lobbyists” are responsible for writing the current United States tax code.

During a panel discussion on CNN’s Sunday broadcast of “State of the Union,” Jones claimed that Trump is not a “genius” for having avoided paying federal income tax for nearly two decades.

“It is in fact true that if Donald Trump lost a billion dollars, think about this, lost a billion dollars he could wind up as a winner, legally in his taxes for a generation,” Jones explained. “Why is that? Is that because he’s a genius?”

“It’s because billionaires have armies of lobbyists to write the rules,” he continued. “Here’s the deal if you’re obeying horrible rules that you helped to write, it doesn’t make you a genius. It makes you part of the corruption.

“Why do you say he helped write them?” Tapper asked.

“I say, uh, that he lobbies,” Jones stammered. “People like him have an army of lobbyists. They go up to the capitol and say put this loophole in, put this loophole in. They’re building the playbook.”

“They follow the rules that they in a corrupt way helped to write. That doesn’t make you a genius.”
