The Clinton campaign Tuesday night insisted that supporting more gun control measures means an individual like Clinton’s running mate Sen. Tim Kaine is a “strong supporter of the Second Amendment.”

Kaine claimed to be just that during a back and forth with Indiana Gov. Mike Pence despite Hillary Clinton tweeting on Monday that Kaine wears his National Rifle Association “F” rating like a badge of honor.

“Yes. Very proud of the F rating. Because both Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine are for common sense gun reform laws. They want to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them,” Clinton spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri told The Daily Caller.

She explained, “I don’t think criminals and people with mental health issues should hold them and that’s not at all at odds with believing in the Second Amendment and Hillary Clinton hadn’t been a Senator for very long, but I don’t imagine she’d have a high rating from the NRA either.”

Kaine’s fellow Virginia Democratic Senator Mark Warner agreed telling TheDC, “I think the vast majority of Second Amendment supporters and gun owners actually do support reasonable gun restrictions such as having background checks—such as making sure terrorists don’t fly and can’t purchase firearms.”

When asked by TheDC if he truly believed attacking the NRA would bring more gun owners to support the Clinton/Kaine campaign, Warner replied, “I would simply go back to the data that says gun owners and NRA members by overwhelming numbers support reasonable background checks and making sure that if you’re too dangerous. Look at the data. Sometimes facts do matter.”
