Community members from the University of Toronto issued a list of demands in response to a professor’s “transphobic” and “racist” comments.

The demands come after professor Jordan Peterson posted a two-part YouTube series in which he disagreed with the idea of a person not identifying exclusively as male or female and criticized the “genderless pronouns.”

Peterson spoke out against a Canadian bill, Bill C-16, that would make discriminating against gender identity and gender expression illegal. (RELATED: Canadian Professor Launches Attack Against Political Correctness)

In response, college members claimed that the University of Toronto had “failed at maintaining a positive space and campuses free of hate.”

“We are deeply concerned about the University’s lack of action on this situation, especially as Peterson continues to spread his transphobic and racist ideologies through various media outlets,” the letter said.

They demanded Peterson make a public apology and retract his statements from his YouTube videos. Members also called for the “transphobic and racist” videos to be taken down.

The groups want a mandated anti oppression training for all levels of the college, including faculty and administration, for each semester. Also, they want the college to take actions to defend students from tenured professors that make “prejudiced comments” against people based on gender expression, orientation, race, etc.

They also want a townhall with the college’s president, vice-president of Human Resources & Equity, the provost and Peterson so members of the college can explain “issues he [Peterson] clearly does not comprehend.”

The groups expressed their desire to have these demands approved at the next Governing Council Oct. 27.
