Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton’s running mate, pandered to a hip hop radio audience on Wednesday, claiming that his nickname is “Lil Kaine,” similar to the stage name for popular rapper Lil Wayne.

The remarks came at the beginning of Kaine’s interview on “No Limit Larry and the Morning Maddhouse,” a morning talk show hosted on Charlotte’s hip hop and R&B station, WPEG.

“They call me Lil Kaine, not Lil Wayne,” the former Virginia governor told the hosts.

The remark is reminiscent of Clinton’s attempt back in April to suck up to the hosts — and audience — of another hip hop show.

“Now listen, I want you to know that people are going to see this and say, ‘She’s pandering to black people,'” co-host Charlamagne Tha God told Clinton during the interview. (RELATED: Hillary Clinton Tells Black Radio Host She Carries Hot Sauce In Her Purse)

During his interview, Kaine was also asked what music he likes to listen to on his campaign airplane. He name-checked two classic R&B groups.

“As we were flying home from St. Louis back to Virginia a couple nights ago we were doing Isley Brothers, [unintelligible], Gnarls Barkley, Sly and the Family Stone, Dave Matthews Band,” he said.

One of the hosts asked Kaine if he’s a fan of the Isley Brothers’ “Between the Sheets.”

“I got work to do,” Kaine replied, seemingly referring to one of the legendary soul group’s hits of a similar name.
