A New York police officer fatally shot a 66-year old black woman who tried to attack the officer with a baseball bat Tuesday night.

New York Police Department (NYPD) officers responded to a neighbor’s call about an “emotionally disturbed” woman, reports Fox 5 NY.

When police showed up to the Bronx apartment, they found the woman in a bedroom holding a pair of scissors.

Officers were able to convince her to put down the scissors, but she then picked up a baseball bat and tried to swing at a police sergeant, NYPD Assistant Chief Larry Nikunen said.

“As the woman attempted to strike the sergeant he fired two shots at the woman from his service gun,” the NYPD said in a tweet. The sergeant who shot her was white.

The woman suffered gunshot wounds to her chest and left elbow; she was later taken to the Jacobi Medical Center and pronounced dead.

Similar calls have been made about the woman previously, but he did not have more information about them, according to Nikunen.

Police said that the sergeant who shot the woman had a taser on him, but did not use it against her. They will be investigating that, as well.

“A full review of the facts and circumstances of this incident will be conducted,” Nikunen said.
