A viral video of a Chinese man violently assaulting a woman in an elevator in front of her child is sparking outrage all over China.

The woman, a Mrs. Li, reportedly asked the man not to smoke in the elevator, noting that the secondhand smoke was detrimental to her child’s health, reports the People’s Daily. This simple request triggered something in the man, and he snapped.

Surveillance footage from the incident, which occurred Oct. 12 in Langfang, Hebei, shows the man push the woman back and start pounding her repeatedly with his fists. During the assault, the woman’s young child sat beside them crying.

Afterwards, the man quickly left the elevator and fled the scene. Police are still trying to track down the suspect. The Hebei Public Security Bureau describes the man as a young man in his 30s with a Northeastern dialect.

In Northeastern China, there is an expression: “If you can fight, there’s no need to argue.” While most people say this jokingly, this young man appears to have taken this expression to heart.

Chinese netizens on Weibo have been highly critical of the man’s actions, pointing out that while this was surely a troubling experience for the woman, the child was most likely traumatized as well.
