North Carolina’s transgender bathroom bill looms over the state’s gubernatorial race as a key issue in the election, reports the Washington Times.

Republican Gov. Pat McCrory faces off against Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper, and a critical issue between the two candidates is House Bill 2, a bill supported by McCrory that requires transgender people to use the bathroom corresponding to the gender assigned at birth.

An Elon University Poll from Sept.19 revealed that 49.5 percent of probable North Carolina voters are against HB2 while 39.5 percent support it. 60 percent believe that the bill negatively impacted North Carolina’s reputation.

About 36 percent said that the way McCrory handled the bathroom bill would make them less likely to vote for him.

McCrory doubled down on his support for it in “Common Sense” — a September ad.

“You know, when we were raising the average teacher pay, creating new jobs and cutting taxes, other folks were actually pushing to make our schools allow boys to use the girls’ locker rooms and showers,” McCrory argued.

Cooper said he would repeal the bill if elected, claiming that HB2 “writes discrimination into our law, and it has been a disaster for our economy.”

Businesses like PayPal are refusing to bring 400 new jobs to the state, while the NBA is threatening to host its 2017 All-Star Game in another state. (RELATED: NBA Moves All-Star Game Out Of North Carolina Due to Bathroom Law)

A Quinnipiac poll taken from Nov. 3 to Nov. 6 shows Cooper at 50 percent and McCrory at 47 percent. Another NY Times/Siena poll, finds Cooper at 47 percent and McCrory at 46 percent.
