Republican nominee Donald Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton by a landslide in Ohio Tuesday, easily securing a key swing state in his bid for the presidency.

It’s a needed win for Trump in one of the first major battleground states called in the race, but not an unexpected victory.

Both Trump and Clinton campaigned aggressively in the state, particularly in their final weeks on the trail, as the state’s 18 electoral votes are a huge pickup. The Clinton camp maintained late into the race it could prove a surprise victory for Democrats.

Clinton led Trump in the polls for much of the race, leading by more than 10 points in a head to head matchup in August in the Real Clear Politics polling average. But the gap narrowed quickly in the last few weeks of the race and Trump took a small lead in the days leading up to the election.
