Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump edged out former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Iowa Tuesday night, garnering all six of the state’s electoral votes.

Trump bested Clinton in the battleground state, 49 to 45 percent. Political analysts believed that Trump must win the state and its six electoral votes if he hopes to have any chance to compete with Clinton on Election Day.

The Real Clear Politics average had Trump beating Clinton 44 percent to 41 percent Monday.

President Barack Obama won Iowa in 2008 and 2012, but Clinton hasn’t fared as well, namely because Trump performed strongly in the polls throughout most of the campaign season.

Trump came out on top in the state despite appeals by Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, as well former primary foe Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Clinton also received help in the state from various actors and musicians.

Trump, meanwhile, sent runningmate Mike Pence to the state eight times for a dozen events throughout the general election. Top supporters, such as former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former primary opponent Ben Carson, also have stumped for Trump in the state.

Polls in the state closed at 9 pm.
