A California deputy was killed in an attack described by police as an “execution” early Sunday morning.

The police officer, identified as 53-year-old David Wallace, was looking into a suspicious vehicle in Hughson, Calif. Wallace received information that a van was stolen, called for backup, and was then shot in the head point-blank.

The suspect, David Machado, then carjacked another vehicle and a manhunt ensued. Machado was captured four hours later in Lindsay, Calif. after committing an armed robbery on the run. He was then recognized as the suspect in the police shooting and was also wanted for an unrelated felony warrant.

“We believe that Deputy Wallace was killed outside of the car, and we know for a fact that the gun used in this crime was in direct contact with his head when the trigger was pulled twice. This was an execution,” Sheriff Adam Christianson said in a statement.

There has been a recent pattern of violence against police officers, including the Dallas shooting in July, where the suspect, who killed five officers and injured nine more, wanted to reportedly “kill white people, especially white officers.” Later in July, three officers were killed in Baton Rouge.
