President Barack Obama acknowledged that his policy toward the crisis in Syria has not been effective.

“I recognize that that has not worked,” said Obama, in response to a question regarding his Syria policy at a press conference Monday afternoon. “It is something that I continue to think about every day. And we continue to try to find some formula that would allow us to see that suffering end.”

It was Obama’s first solo White House press conference since last year.

Obama noted that his administration has “made every effort” to try and bring about a “political resolution” to the Syrian challenge. He hailed Secretary of State John Kerry’s efforts to negotiate a solution with Syrian and Russian officials. Kerry’s negotiations failed twice to establish a long-term ceasefire to the now five-year long conflict. The conflict has claimed the lives of around 400,000 people, according to a United Nations report released in April.
