A group of Democratic state attorneys general have vowed to fight the Trump administration in the courts.

Since Republicans control the White House and both chambers of Congress, state attorneys general will be one of the few recourses Democrats have to resist the Trump agenda — 21 of the 50 state attorneys general are Democrats.

“I view my role as being on the first line of defense against a Trump administration if it chooses to act in an unconstitutional fashion,” Bob Ferguson, the Democratic attorney general of Washington state, told Reuters.

“The President-elect has made a number of promises that, if implemented, would violate the Constitution or Massachusetts law,” Massachusetts attorney general Maura Healey said in a statement, according to Reuters. A hotline for hate and bias-related crimes is currently featured on the top of her website.

One of the first battles between local governments and the Trump administration could be over immigration. The president-elect has promised to increase the pace of deportations for illegal immigrants convicted of felonies. In the days following the general election, the mayors of New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. have said they will attempt to maintain their status as so-called “sanctuary cities.” (RELATED: Bowser Reaffirms DC Is Still A Sanctuary City)

The values, laws, and policies of Washington, DC did not change on Election Day,” Mayor Bowser said a statement on Monday night. “We celebrate our diversity and respect all DC residents no matter their immigration status. We are a sanctuary city because we know that our neighborhoods are safer and stronger when no one is afraid to call on our government for help, and when our police can focus on protecting and serving.”

Early Friday, it was reported that Trump selected Alabama Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions to serve as attorney general.
