A student group at Texas A&M led a demonstration Monday to demand that college administrators make the campus a sanctuary for illegal immigrant students.

Led by the student group Council for Minority Student Affairs, students led chants in English and Spanish to demand the college become a “sanctuary campus,” reports TheEagle.com.

Most of the time, the phrase “sanctuary campus” refers to a college campus that will protect and shield their illegal students from being deported.

Organizers at the rally, called “Undocumented & Unafraid,” pointed to an online petition that outlined their specific demands for changing the college into a sanctuary campus.

The petition, written by three associate professors, demands that the university provide counselling for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) students and to let students eligible for DACA pay in-state tuition rates.

The petition also demands that the university not cooperate with deportation efforts and keep private the immigration status of both faculty and students.

The rally allowed people to come forward and talk about immigration and offer support to illegal immigrant students.  One participant, Cinthia Cruz, told attendees that she lives in fear of being deported on any given day.

“My hopes, my dreams might be taken away from me by people who don’t understand what it’s like to be undocumented,” Cruz said.

College students across the country are leading the charge to either turn colleges into “sanctuary campuses” or to protect illegal immigrant students from being deported. (RELATED: College Students Now Demanding ‘Sanctuary Campuses’ To Protect Illegals From Trump)

University of Wisconsin students recently started a petition to transform the campus into a “sanctuary,” while students and faculty at Brown University wrote a letter demanding that the campus become a safe place for those “who face imminent deportation.”
