A Michigan university officer has emerged from surgery after being shot in the head while guarding the campus Tuesday evening.

Wayne State Police Chief Anthony Holt informed reporters during a Wednesday press conference that “things are very grave” for Colin Rose, the 29-year-old Wayne State University police officer, reports the Detroit Free Press.

Rose is on life support as well, according to Holt.

“This is a very difficult day for me. In 40-plus years at Wayne State never thought have day like this,” Holt said at the press conference.

Rose was in the middle of investigating complaints about navigation systems being stolen from cars when he radioed in to say he was about to talk to someone on a bike, according to Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

Craig said that when officers came to the scene as backup, they found Rose on the ground, injured.

The motive for the shooting is still unclear, according to M. Roy Wilson, the university’s president. They don’t know “whether it was an ambush or something different,” he said.

Wilson admitted that the recent attacks on law enforcement did cross their minds. Four police officers in the U.S. were shot in a 24 hour period last weekend.

After launching what law enforcement called an enormous manhunt, they were able to apprehend a person of interest in the shooting. Dozens of armed officers searched the residential area of Woodbridge.

Police took a suspect into custody about three blocks from where the shooting happened. The man arrested in connection with the shooting has a history of assaulting police officers, according to state records.

The man was charged in 2009 with felony assault involving an officer, a dangerous weapon and bodily harm less than murder in a case involving the Taylor Police Department. The man ended up pleading guilty to assault causing bodily harm and received a 90 day jail sentence.

The man was again charged in 2011 for two charges of felony assault of a police officer and plead guilty to those charges. He was sentenced to 53 days in jail.

Rose remains in critical condition in Detroit Receiving Hospital.
