Dozens of migrants recently sank their own boat and drowned in the Mediterranean Sea, as they scrambled to board a Tunisian fishing ship they mistook for a European coast guard vessel.

The crew aboard the Tunisian fishing boat tossed several ropes to the migrants’ inflatable craft as it approached the starboard side of the ship. In the ensuing chaos, some of the migrants attempted to scale the side of the fishing boat and reach the safety of the deck.

Others dove into the water, while those still aboard the raft — which was burgeoning with people — flailed for space and traction, trapped in a human Gordian knot, according to the video released Monday. (RELATED: You Won’t Believe How Backlogged The Immigration Courts Are)

In the water, a mess of migrants shoved and climbed over one another as they attempted to reach the safety of the Tunisian vessel.

WATCH (Warning: Graphic):

In short order, the migrants’ inflatable raft began to buckle under the weight of their jostling. Many clung to the side of the fishing boat, as others floated motionless in the water.
