Voters are unsure of what exactly constitutes fake news, according to a Thursday poll published by Morning Consult.

Although Democratic and Republican voters are split on where fake news comes from, most voters are able to say they experience fake news on a regular basis. Thirty-one percent report that they see fake news “more than once a day,” and 18 percent confirm they see fake news “about once a day.” A surprisingly large 26 percent of respondents report that they don’t know if they see fake news or not.

By far, the highest-rated news outlet is ABC, with 24 percent of viewers reporting it is “very credible,” and 43 percent as “credible.” CBS comes in second, and NBC and The Wall Street Journal are third and fourth.

Fox News does well among all viewers. Fifty-five percent of respondents rate the cable news channel as credible to some degree, but it also receives the highest amount of negative ratings. Thirty-eight percent of voters report they don’t feel like Fox News is credible.

When party affiliation is included in the poll, the results look much different. Democrats lower the ratings of Wall Street Journal, Fox News and Breitbart. Republicans elevate Fox News and Wall Street Journal to the top two most credible outlets, according to respondents. Breitbart News receives a small bump over Democratic ratings, but only 26 percent of Republicans trust the site.

Some outlets are hampered in the ratings because respondents don’t know they exist. Forty-two percent of respondents have not heard of Breitbart, and 49 percent report they don’t know enough about Infowars to form an opinion. Seventeen percent of respondents report they haven’t heard of National Public Radio, an outlet 51 percent of respondents say is credible.

Morning Consult surveyed 1,605 people from Dec. 1 through Dec. 2. The poll carries a margin of error of 2 percentage points in either direction.
