Two sources close to the situation told Politico Friday that McDaniel — the current head of the Republican Party in Michigan — is expected to join the president-elect at a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan Friday night but could not confirm if Trump will formally announce his pick. McDaniel, who happens to be Mitt Romney’s niece, is outgoing RNC chair Reince Priebus’ top pick to fill his position, the sources added.

Priebus will make the move from the RNC to the White House — where he will serve as Trump’s chief of staff — in January but not before the committee elects his successor.

An RNC official declined The Daily Caller’s request for comment on the situation.

It should be noted that 2016 marked the first year Michigan went Republican in a presidential election since 1988.
