Atlantic Magazine published a list of the “worst leader of all time,” a list that included Hitler, the Devil, as well as Republican presidents George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan Tuesday.
The Atlantic started the conversation by asking its readers who they thought the worst leader of all time was, and published some of the responses to the question. Some were predictable, like the Devil, and Nazi Dictator Adolf Hitler, but two of the list’s entries were especially puzzling. Former presidents George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan topped the list, according to the Atlantic article.
“Bush’s invasion of Iraq was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of millions, was a major factor in the dismemberment of nation-states, and the tally goes on,” author Laurence Leamer told The Atlantic.
Second on the list was Jefferson Davis, who led the confederacy through a short-lived tenure during the Civil War. “But c’mon, the answer is Hitler. It has to be Hitler,” author Matt Karp wrote in his response.
Next up was a list of violent dictators, including Pol Pot, Idi Amin, and the obvious candidate for the “worst” anything: Adolf Hitler. The list was supplied by CNN co-host Chris Cuomo.
Rounding up the list is former President Ronald Reagan. “Tens of thousands of gay men were wiped off the map simply because he refused to speak, much less act. What’s worse than ignoring a national health crisis while you stuff your face full of jelly beans and your wife reads her horoscope in the next room?” TV Land co-host Bryan Safi wrote in his response.
The Atlantic didn’t write the responses to the list, but it did publish what it thought were the top responses to the open question the magazine asked of its readers. Deciding to print the article came after Jeffrey Goldberg became editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, The Daily Signal reported.
The New York Times cited Goldberg’s influence in publishing the third ever endorsement in the history of the publication in favor of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. President-elect Donal Trump was “the most ostentatiously unqualified major-party candidate in the 227-year history of the American presidency,” according to the official editorial published in the magazine.
