Fifth Twitter Executive Leaves In Two Months

Kathy Chen, Twitter’s managing director of Greater China, is leaving the social media company after starting roughly eight months ago.

Chen marks the fifth time a Twitter executive announced their departure in under three months, and seems to be part of a larger trend for the tech company. (RELATED: Twitter Prepares To Lay Off Roughly 300 People In Coming Weeks)

Chen reported her intent to leave with 12 separate tweets on the social media platform.

Chen reportedly never used Twitter before last year, and was considered a somewhat controversial hire because of her past employment, which included being an engineer and missile defense researcher for China’s People’s Liberation Army, according to TechCrunch. She worked as an executive for Microsoft, Cisco, and more notably as CEO of an antivirus company that is backed by a wing of China’s Ministry of Public Security, which some say means she could have engaged in the country’s surveillance practices. Twitter is technically blocked in China, but advertisers seek the social media platform as a source for advertising.
