A violent riot broke out at a migrant center Tuesday in Italy as residents started fires in protest of a woman’s sudden death.

Some 25 employees were barricaded inside the building for several hours before police arrived to mediate the situation. The migrants disrupted the power supply, blocked exits and started several fires, according to the ANSA news agency. (RELATED: Poll: Half Of Italians No Longer Feel At Home Because Of Immigration)

The riot started after the 25-year-old Ivorian woman suddenly passed out and died in the shower. The migrants argued the woman died because of a late response from rescue services. Police said the woman died after one of the pulmonary arteries in her lungs collapsed. (RELATED: Italy Spends $1 Billion On Increasing Culture To Combat ISIS)

“I want to stress that it is in the prosecutors’ interest to divulge the cause of death to avert concern spreading about possible diseases believed to be dangerous for others,” said prosecutor Lucia D’Alessandro, according to ANSA. “For that reason we are carrying out all possible checks relating to the health conditions of the guests of the facility.”

Around 1,400 asylum seekers are housed at the former military base in central Italy near Venice.
