Hostages are reportedly being held at a Tuscaloosa, Ala. bank by at least one person, an Alabama CBS affiliate reports.

Tuscaloosa Police Lt. Teena Richardson told the CBS news outlet that at least one armed suspect entered the Alabama Credit Union branch at approximately 8:30 a.m., shortly before the business opened. Authorities believe the assailant intended to rob the bank, but has thus far taken an unknown number of hostages.

The University of Alabama issued an alert to students, saying law enforcement was responding to reports of a robbery and hostage situation near the university campus.

At this time, authorities do not know how many people are currently inside the bank, but they have confirmed that no customers were inside when the suspect entered.

“Negotiators are trying to establish contact with the suspect at this time,” Richardson told reporters.

Richardson has yet to comment with The Daily Caller News Foundation.
