Whether you believe in gay marriage or not, one thing’s for sure: There’s nothing more important than the narrative. Not facts, not evidence, not… well, not even time.

Megan McCluskey, Time:

To commemorate President Barack Obama’s final day in office, Ellen DeGeneres spent a few minutes of Thursday’s episode of The Ellen Show saying goodbye to him and First Lady Michelle Obama.

“I am a legally married woman because of him and so is my wife [Portia de Rossi]. His courage and compassion created equality for everyone.”

What a lovely sentiment. I’m sure it’s heartfelt, but there’s just one problem: Ellen got married in 2008, and Obama opposed gay marriage until 2012. If anything, she’s a legally married woman in spite of him.

But whatever. It’s not about facts. It’s about feelings! She’s richer and more famous than you are, and both she and Obama are designated victims. So just nod and smile. Take that narrative. Take it. Take it all.

They really can’t figure out why they lost, can they?
