Hundreds of thousands of women got great Instagram pics from the celebrated Saturday march on Washington, but just a few days later President Donald Trump delivered a blow to their movement by defunding abortion groups worldwide.

Trump signed an executive order Monday reinstating a ban on federal funding of organizations abroad that provide abortion, making it clear he intends to serve as a pro-life president. The so-called “Mexico City policy” was first put in place under Ronald Reagan, and has been in place during every Republican administration since then, although Democrats have overturned it.

The order bans organizations in other countries that receive from the U.S. government from providing abortions, and also bans them from advocating for abortion laws or promoting the procedure in any way. It was among the first few orders signed by Trump Monday, sending a clear signal that was celebrated by pro-life groups.

“Human Coalition expresses its deep appreciation to President Trump for re-instating the Mexico City Policy,” one group said in a statement following the signing.

The impact is a reality check for the millions of women who marched on Washington Saturday in a protest of Trump that was largely centered on the so-called “reproductive right” to end the lives of unborn children. Media outlets celebrated what was widely regarded as a wildly successful march, running glowing headlines such as one from The Atlantic: “The Inauguration of the Resistance.” But in terms of concrete results, the “resistance” so far has nothing to show for its efforts.
