Police busted two former and two current college football players from the University of Charleston in West Virginia on heroin distribution charges Saturday.

Authorities went to a motel in Kanawha City after receiving a call of suspicious activity. Responding officers smelled marijuana coming from a room and subsequently knocked on the door and asked to come in. The four athletes allegedly gave police permission to enter the room, where they found 27 bundles of heroin, a large amount of cash, digital scales, three mason jars of marijuana and a handgun, reports WSAZ.

The four men initially told police the seized heroin was fake, but officers later tested it and the substance came up positive for heroin.

“The event occurred off campus and, at that time, only two of the individuals in question, Nic Covington and Juan Morgan, were active members of the UC football team,” David Traube, communications director for the University of Charleston, told WSAZ. “The two have since been dismissed. We will wait for the results of the investigation before providing any additional information.”

Two of the men arrested, Kaimire Hodge and Justin Hall, were previously on the University of Charleston football team but were kicked off in the Fall for academic reasons. All four are being held at the South Central Regional Jail and there are no details yet on when they will appear in court, reports Charleston Gazette-Mail.

Authorities list the handgun found as stolen from Virginia. Hodge confessed to buying it for $400 from a stranger. Hodge, 20, faces felony charges of receiving or transferring stolen goods and possession with intent to deliver heroin. Authorities set his bond at $100,000.

Morgan, 19, Hall, 18, and Covington, 19, all face felony charges of possession with intent to deliver heroin and are held on $75,000 bond.
