During a Thursday press conference, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for Jeff Sessions’ resignation and the opening of a separate investigation into the Alabama Republican’s reported contacts with Russian officials, to be carried out by the inspector general of the Justice Department.

“There cannot be even the scintilla of doubt about the impartiality and fairness of the attorney general, the top law enforcement official of the land.” Schumer told reporters on The Hill. “After this, it’s clear Attorney General Sessions does not meet that test.”

“Because the Department of Justice should be above reproach for the good of the country, Attorney General Sessions should resign.”

Additionally, Schumer called on acting Deputy Attorney General Dana Boente to appoint a special prosecutor to continue the investigation, currently being conducted by Sessions, on alleged Russian tampering into the 2016 election.

Should Boente not appoint a special prosecutor, or select one that doesn’t meet Schumer’s own moral standards, the New York Democrat stated he would work with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan to craft an updated version of the Independent Council Law.
