A fire burned down an entire Nome, N.D., church owned by a white supremacist Wednesday.

Only the steeple of the Zion Lutheran Church remained from the fire, reports CNN. Craig Cobb, a white supremacist, has partial ownership of the church, according to its deed.

Barnes County Sheriff’s Office explained that the church had burned down by the time firefighters arrived on the scene. They have yet to determine what caused the fire.

Jerome Jankowski, a resident living close to the church, noticed it on fire around 3 p.m.

“It’s kind of sad that it goes, because it’s kind of a landmark in this town,” Jankowski said of the church burning down.

Much of the community expressed sadness over the church burning down.

“In a small community you are all family and that church kept everyone connected in some way and that is what will be missed the most,” Jessie Penderson said.

Cobb claimed someone burned down his property on purpose; he is offering a $2,000 reward for anyone who brings forward information concerning the case.

He tried to turn Leith into an all-white town a few years ago. He started by buying up property and tried to get fellow white supremacists to move there as well.

“We hate that which threatens what we love,” Cobb said at the time. “And we’re being genocided in our own country. Wouldn’t you? Wouldn’t you be bitter about it?”
