Amazon is building a one-million-square-foot facility and an e-commerce warehouse distribution center in northern Virginia, bringing 1,000 jobs to the Old Dominion state.
“We are proud that Amazon will grow its presence in Virginia with this major investment,” Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe said in a statement Tuesday. “Amazon’s expansion is a powerful illustration of our ongoing success building a new Virginia economy,” he said in defense of his record as Virginia’s 72nd governor.
The state was reportedly competing with West Virginia for the facility. The project was secured through the Virginia Economic Development Partnership in conjunction with Frederick County, according to ABC 13 WSET. Amazon will be eligible for government subsidized funding for employee training activities, as well as a “Major Business Facility Tax Credit,” according to WSET.
Amazon announced at the beginning of the year that it plans to hire more than 100,000 workers in the United States. The announcement was received with great fan fare, and reflected the online retail giant’s expansion into new markets like groceries, hardware and fashion. The company’s new fulfillment center will be its fourth in Virginia, where the online retail giant already employs 3,500 full-time employees. The one-million-square-foot facility in Clear Brook, on the state’s northern edge, will employ 1,000 workers who will pick up, pack and ship larger items like televisions and furniture, according to MarketWatch.
“Our ability to expand in Virginia is the result of two things: incredible customers and an outstanding workforce in the state,” Amazon’s vice president of North America Operations, Akash Chauhan said according to Fox 5 DC.
“We are excited to expand to support the more than 85,000 authors, sellers, and developers in Virginia growing their businesses and reaching new customers on Amazon products and services,” he added.
