Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn asserted there would not be a government shutdown during a Sunday interview on Fox and Friends.

Although he seemed certain that House and Senate Republicans would be able to work towards a short-term spending bill that would avoid a government shutdown in a few weeks, he also asserted that the decision would ultimately be up to Sen. Chuck Schumer and other Democrats.

“They are going to be the ones ultimately who negotiate this,” Cornyn said during the interview.

Even though the final decision was left to Democrats, Cornyn has high hopes that Republicans and Democrats can work together on the budget issue.

“There’s not going to be a shutdown,” Cornyn said. “I’m confident that we’ll come up with something that everybody can live with.”

A poll published last Wednesday by Morning Consult found that 65 percent of voters want to avoid a shutdown, but 17 percent felt that a shutdown would be acceptable as long as it was used to obtain a certain goal. Thirty-eight percent asserted they would support a shutdown if it could be used to fund the border wall in some way.

Top Republicans announced they felt there is limited need for a shutdown, because there are several high-profile need to pass items that the GOP can use as leverage, according to statements made by House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows during a Politico interview Thursday.
