A majority of self-identified Republicans want further military action in Syria, according to a poll released Monday by CBS.

The poll found that a majority of Americans, 57 percent, approved of the Thursday airstrikes against the Syrian regime, while 36 percent disapproved of the action by the Trump administration.

When broken down by party line, 84 percent of Republicans supported the airstrikes, as did 40 percent of Democrats. The poll, which was conducted after the military action, asked the respondents how much military involvement against Syria they would support.

Just 12 percent of Republicans said there should be no further military action and just diplomatic talks, while 37 percent supported more airstrikes but no troops, and 34 percent backed a full US ground war in Syria.

Among Americans in general, 48 percent support further military action in Syria, while 36 percent disagree. U.N. envoy Nikki Haley said Friday that the Trump administration is willing to take further military action against Assad.

The airstrikes against a Syrian airfield were due to a chemical attack allegedly perpetrated by the Syrian regime. The poll found that 87 percent of Americans believe that the Syrian government’s use of chemical weapons is immoral, and 45 percent think it is a direct threat to the U.S.

CBS conducted the telephone poll of 1,006 adults from April 7 to April 9. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.
