Video of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov taking an apparent swipe at Andrea Mitchell went viral on Wednesday, yet NBC News’ chief foreign affairs correspondent now says she was not the “target” of the barb.
In the short clip, Lavrov interrupted a reporter attempting to question Secretary of State Rex Tillerson by asking her “who gave you your manners?”

“My colleague [Washington Post Diplomatic Correspondent] Carol Morello was the brave journalist who started asking questions,” Mitchell said in a statement to The Daily Caller. “Lavrov was looking right at her. I was on the opposite side of the room, behind him, out of sight.”
“Perhaps I was a convenient foil, but I’m pretty sure I wasn’t his target.”
