Police have charged a bicyclist who struck and killed an elderly magazine editor in Washington, D.C. last month.
Zakkai Stanley Kauffman-Rogoff, the 27-year-old bicyclist, has been charged with disobeying a traffic device, the Washington Post reports.
The police have issued Kauffman-Rogoff a citation, and Aquita Brown, spokeswoman for the D.C. police, told the Washington Post that “the investigation is still ongoing, and [police are] working with the United States Attorney’s Office to determine if any additional charges may apply.”
David Benowitz, attorney for the bicyclist, said Kauffman-Rogoff “denies culpability in this unfortunate event, and that he has cooperated and will continue to cooperate with the investigation.”
Kauffman-Rogoff struck 65-year-old Jane Bennett Clark, senior editor of the personal finance magazine Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, in March, just as she was stepping off the southwest curb at 13th and I streets NW into the crosswalk. After he hit Clark with his bicycle, he remained on the scene until police arrived.
Although Clark was rushed to the hospital, she unfortunately died from her injuries the next day. While at Kiplinger’s, she wrote about retirement issues and post-career life advice.
A Takoma Park resident, the area where Clark lived, said neighbors and friends were totally devastated by her death.
