Virgil Bernero, the mayor of Lansing, Michigan, was unable to say if he would report to federal authorities illegal immigrants caught drunk driving in his state during an interview on Fox News’ Wednesday broadcast of “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

Carlson spent most of the interview grilling Bernero on his city’s attempts to become a sanctuary city that shields illegal immigrants from federal deportation.

In a particularly testy exchange, The Daily Caller founder asked Bernero if he would report an illegal immigrant to federal authorities if the immigrant was caught driving under the influence.

“That’s a good question that I don’t have the answer to,” Bernero said. “I would think certainly on a second offense they would.”

“Why would you not deport someone who is driving drunk?” Carlson fumed. “Are you serious?”

Bernero explained that he might not move to deportation on a first offense “if nobody was hurt,” and instead would wait until the illegal immigrant became a repeat offender.

“Then it’s all cool,” Carlson said sarcastically. “If they didn’t actually hit any kids in the crosswalk this time then it’s totally cool!”
