California transgender protesters gathered at San Diego’s LGBT center to shout slurs at a transgender cop during an awards ceremony Friday.

The group of protesters shouted “We don’t want a pig in here,” when San Diego police officer Christine Garcia went up to receive a Transgender Day of Empowerment award, reports LGBTQ Nation.

The group also shouted other slurs and held up signs reading “Revolution not Reform” and “I Will Not Put Up With This Sh*t.”

Mayor of Hillcrest Nicole Murray-Ramirez said the protesters consisted of gay and straight people, according to San Diego Gay and Lesbian News.

“This attack on police officer Garcia was one of the most ugliest incidents against our own that I have ever witnessed in our community,” Murray Ramirez said.

Garcia brushed off the verbal attack, saying she became a police officer to protect the protesters’ rights to free speech.

“I wear a badge everyday and I put my life on the line to allow them to say what they want about me. Allow them their right to free speech as long as it’s peaceful,” she told the crowd.

Other people drowned out the protesters by giving Garcia a standing ovation and booing the protesters, trans-activist Autumn Sandeen claimed.

“The protesters didn’t change any hearts and minds to their cause, or set in motion a course of action which would change hearts and minds of the people in the room, which in the end probably should’ve been the goal of their direct action,” Sandeen wrote in a Facebook post.
