High-profile Republican senators, such as Ted Cruz of Texas, Marco Rubio of Florida, and Rand Paul of Kentucky, signed a letter today aimed at saving the job of Jim DeMint, current president of the Heritage Foundation.
Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Mark Walker of North Carolina co-authored the letter to Heritage’s board of trustees, which is expected to be released to the public Wednesday, according to New York Post.
“You have inspired a new generation of leaders — at every level of government and society — to step forward and stand boldly behind the principles that have fostered the development of the greatest civilization the world has ever known,” said part of the letter’s draft.
“We think they’ll be hard-pressed to find someone who can do better than him,” stated a Senate source to New York Post. “It’s really a loss for them. You have someone who was in the Senate who could pick up the phone and call Cruz or Rubio whenever he wanted. I’m not sure anyone who replaces him could do that overnight.”
Jim DeMint served as the Republican senator for South Carolina before leaving to head the Heritage Foundation.
Mike Needham, head of Heritage Action for America, the think tank’s political sister organization, is involved in the leadership shift. He reportedly desires to shift the Heritage Foundation away from what he perceives to be advocacy and towards a more research-focused presence, according to sources contacted by New York Post.
The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to the Heritage Foundation, DeMint, and Needham for comment but did not hear back in time for publication.
