President Donald Trump said Monday that he is open to raising the federal gas tax in order to fund infrastructure projects.
“It’s something that I would certainly consider,” he told Bloomberg News during an interview.
Trump said the plan would be supported by truckers as long as the taxes raised would be earmarked “toward the highways.”
In addition, Trump called the tax plan he released last week the beginning of negotiations, explaining that “everything is a starting point.”
The proposed one-page plan would cut the corporate tax rate to 15 percent and eliminate the alternative minimum tax and estate tax, but did not mention any changes to the gas tax.
