Authorities arrested a Colorado man Thursday who performed an at-home castration on a transgender woman.

James Lowell Pennington, an airline captain, was charged with first degree assault after he allegedly spent ninety minutes removing the testicles of a transgender woman last Wednesday, according to a police affidavit.

Pennington does not have a license to perform medical procedures, police said, but did not elaborate whether he had experience with surgery. During the surgery, Pennington allegedly used “the scalpel and surgically disconnected and removed the victim’s 2 testicles and then sutured the opening back up.”

The transgender woman’s wife, who was present during the surgery, called 911 when the wound opened back up and would not stop bleeding.

ExpressJet Airlines, Pennington’s employer for the past twelve years, placed him on leave in light of the recent accusations, the corporate communications director told ABC 7 Chicago.

The transgender woman wrote a letter Saturday night defending Pennington, saying performing the surgery helped him.

“However, I am not a victim of 57 year old James Lowell Pennington who is the suspect in this case. I am a victim of a society and healthcare system that focuses on trying to demonize transgender people and prevent us from getting the medical transition we need instead of trying to do what is best for us,” the transgender woman wrote in a statement about the case, adding that he would not be pressing charges against Pennington.
