The U.S. military conducted a successful intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) intercept test Tuesday, with an interceptor eliminating the incoming missile in a “direct collision.”

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), working alongside the Air Force 30th Space Wing, the Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense, and U.S. Northern Command, launched an interceptor from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at a mock ICBM fired from the Reagan Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific. A video released by the MDA shows the destruction of the incoming ICBM.

Watch:

The intercept test comes at a time of increased tension with North Korea, which is advancing its ballistic missile program at an accelerated rate and pursuing an ICBM.

“I was confident before the test that we had the capability to defeat any threat that they would throw at us,” Vice Admiral Jim Syring, director of the MDA, told reporters. “And I’m even more confident today after seeing the intercept test yesterday that we continue to be on that course.”
