U.S. military officials have confirmed that Russian warships launched four ballistic cruise missiles into Syria from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, the U.S. Naval Institute reports.

The Admiral Essen frigate and the Krasnodar submarine fired the four heavy explosives at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, targeting the eastern part of Palmyra, the de facto capitol of the terrorist group, where supposed heavy weapons and militants were stationed.

Palmyra has become the capitol of the extremist group as forces close in on the terrorists once main hub of Raqqa.

Although initial numbers of those killed are unclear, cruise missiles inflict severe damage on targets and have been the weapon of choice for many large assaults on the radical group.

The news comes after multiple attacks across the Middle East and Europe have shaken the modern World. Russia supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while the U.S. position is that Assad must be replaced with an elected leader.
