Fareed Zakaria said Monday the travel ban being sought by the Trump administration is a “nonsense solution to a non-problem,” in an interview on CNN’s “New Day.”

The comments come just two days after the terrorist attack on London Bridge, where suspects sliced people’s throats while screaming, “this is for my family, this is for Islam.”

Zakaria was skeptical of President Donald Trump’s good intentions and called his sincerity on the travel ban into question.

“[Trump] thinks it’s the best way to convince his base… that he’s tough on terrorism,” said Zakaria. “The problems you face is indoctrination, ideology, all those things, the problem is not somebody coming in on a tourist visa.”

Zakaria added that the majority of terror attacks in the United States and in Europe are carried out by homegrown terrorists, and that the U.S. should be more worried about their own people than foreign threats.

Host Alisyn Camerota agreed with Zakaria, saying there is evidence to support this statement, but that Trump is citing different facts and research to backup his agenda.

Zakaria ended by saying, “everything Trump does works in the opposite direction.”

Trump is once again calling for the travel ban to be upheld and for stronger vetting to prevent future attacks on U.S. soil.
