Russian President Vladimir Putin verbally shrugged when asked about killing journalists in an interview with Megyn Kelly that aired Sunday night on NBC.

The interview was filmed in Russia and aired on the debut of Kelly’s new Sunday night show.

“Many Americans hear the name Vladimir Putin and they think he runs a country full of corruption, a country in which journalists who are too critical could wind up murdered, a country in which dissidents could wind up in jail or worse,” Kelly said. “To people who believe that, what is your message?”

Putin Responded: “I want to say that Russia is developing along a democratic path, that is certain and no one should have any doubt about that. Why do you feel you have the right to ask us these kinds of questions and do it all the time and moralize us and tell us how to live?”

Putin also continued to deny any connection between the U.S. and Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign in the interview, a subject which has dominated media attention in recent months. “I haven’t seen, even once, any direct proof of Russian interference in the Presidential election in The United States,” he said.
