Theresa May: Human Rights, Shuman Rights

Font Size:

Look, I hate Islamic terrorism as much as the next racist right-wing teabagger, but I don’t like the sound of this…

“I mean longer prison sentences for those convicted of terrorist offenses. I mean making it easier for the authorities to deport foreign terrorist suspects back to their own countries. And I mean doing more to restrict the freedom and movements of terrorist suspects when we have enough evidence to know they are a threat, but not enough evidence to prosecute them in full in court. And if our human rights laws stop us from doing it, we’ll change the laws so we can do it.”

I’m with Theresa May on those first two policies. But the third… Does that sound right to you guys? I don’t like the implications of that. Maybe I’m just a rights-hugger, but I kinda like rights. I’m a fan of rights. I think they should apply to everybody, even if they’re suspected of being a threat.

Yes, it’s infuriating that again and again, these terrorists are described after the fact as being “known to security services.” It’s frustrating. But is the solution to lock them up when they haven’t done anything?

Hell, I’m sure some people suspect me of being a threat, just because I say things they don’t like. Does that mean the laws should be changed to take away my rights?

On second thought, don’t answer that.
