Black leaders reacted with rage against the justice system after a police officer was found not guilty in the fatal shooting of a black driver Friday afternoon.
“My God I am angry. They wonder why we rebel and riot and resist and tear shit up. They say ‘be calm’ and ‘wait for justice.’ We get this,” Shaun King, the senior justice writer for the New York Daily News, tweeted.
A jury of 12 cleared Officer Jeronimo Yanez of all charges associated with his July shooting of Castile Philando. “They shot Philando Castile on Facebook Live in front of his fiancé and her daughter & even that’s not enough for a guilty verdict. I can’t,” Matthew A. Cherry, a writer and director tweeted.
“#PhilandoCastile Another day without justice for him and so many others,” April, the creator of #OscarsSoWhite,” tweeted.
“It’s tiring to know that cops are absolved from the same laws we must follow. Modern day lynching #PhilandoCastile #BlackLivesMatter,” George M Johnson, an activist and Ebony journalist, tweeted.
Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson also joined in, telling Castile to “Rest in Power.”
