The city of St. Anthony, Minnesota will pay out $3 million to Philando Castile’s family, a black gun owner who was shot by a police officer, according to a Monday statement.
The settlement procedure moved forward quickly to help the family and the city at large heal from the July fatal shooting, reports CNN.
“The death of Philando Castile is a tragedy for his family and for our community,” the statement from the city and the family’s lawyers said. “The parties moved expeditiously to resolve potential civil claims resulting from this tragedy in order to allow the process of healing to move forward for the Castile family, for the people of St. Anthony Village, and for all those impacted by the death of Philando Castile throughout the United States.”
St. Anthony Police Department Officer Jeronimo Yanez fatally shot Castile during a traffic stop in July. Yanez, believing Castile matched the description of a robbery suspect, pulled him over. During the exchange, Yanez shot Castile seven times in front of his daughter and girlfriend, thinking that Castile was going for his gun.
A jury of twelve acquitted Yanez of all manslaughter charges, although the prosecution argued Yanez acted too hastily during the traffic stop. (RELATED: Cop Found Not Guilty In Death Of Philando Castile)
“No amount of money could ever replace Philando,” the statement read. “With resolution of the claims the family will continue to deal with their loss through the important work of the Philando Castile Relief Foundation.”
