German Chancellor Angela Merkel won’t “overlook tensions” with U.S. President Donald Trump at the G20 summit in Hamburg, saying the Paris climate agreement is “irreversible and non-negotiable.”
Without mentioning Trump by name, Merkel spent a large portion of her parliamentary address Thursday condemning the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris accord.
“[Those] who believe the problems of this world can be solved though isolationism and protectionism are sorely mistaken,” Merkel said. “Only together will we manage to find the right answers to the central questions of our time.”
Merkel said the European Union is more “determined than ever” to make a “success” of the agreement. She expects difficult discussions with Trump when world leaders meet in Hamburg July 7.
“We cannot expect easy discussions on climate change at the G20 summit,” she said. “Our differences with the U.S. are clear.”
Merkel recently urged the EU to “take its fate into its own hands” as the U.S. and the United Kingdom are looking after their own interests. (RELATED: Merkel Says Europe Can No Longer Rely On US, UK)
Germany and France have come with a “medium-term plan for deepening the EU and the euro zone,” Merkel said, as she reiterated her call for closer cooperation.
“We need the G20 more than ever,” she said. “We can get things accomplished more quickly and efficiently than would ever be possible for individual nations.”
