Facebook announced Friday that it is significantly enhancing a feature that allows users to pinpoint nearby access to the internet.
Known as its “Find-Wi-Fi” option, the social media company roughly a year ago first offered users of Apple’s iOS (operating system) in a “handful of countries” the ability to search for wireless and local internet.
Now, however, Facebook is rolling out Find Wi-Fi to everywhere in the world for both the iPhone and Android, Google’s operating system embedded on many smartphones. (RELATED: More Than A Quarter Of The World Uses Facebook At Least Once A Month)
The function could help solve one of the biggest problems in the 21st century — finding wi-fi. From traveling to foreign countries with very restricted (if any) data, to being in a location with limited general service, finding wi-fi can be critical for a number of daily functions in the present times.
The company says that, in order to utilize the technological capability and find internet hotspots, a user must:
Open your Facebook app, click on the “More” tab and then “Find Wi-Fi.” Once in the “Find Wi-Fi” tab you may need to turn it on. You can then browse the closest available hotspots on a map, and learn more about the businesses hosting them.
The social media service turned tech conglomerate has been developing an internet-supplying drone in recent months and years in order to provide parts of the world that lack such critical infrastructure, like some of Africa. After a flopped first attempt in November, Facebook said Thursday that Aquila, its unmanned aircraft, had a mostly successful test run in an Arizona desert.
